1 – Hokkaido’s highlands
Head to Hokkaido for Japan’s earliest autumn colours.
From mid-September, the spectacular Daisetsuzan National Park is a riot of reds and yellows, best enjoyed from its hiking trails.
Where? Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, gateway to the mountains.
2 – Lake Towada
Located in the Towada-Hachimantai National Park in northern Honshu, this lake is famed for its deep blue colour and rugged beauty.
Where? Hoshino Resorts Oirase Keiryu Hotel, a 20-minute drive away.
3 – Arashiyama, Kyoto
Kyoto’s western Arashiyama district is famed for its forested mountains, with momiji maples covering the hillside in reds and yellows from early November.
The best way to see the colours?
Take a trip on the Sagano Romantic Train or along the Hozugawa river.
Where? HOSHINOYA Kyoto: the short boat ride there provides photo opportunities aplenty!
4 – Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route
Using a combination of trolley buses, trains and cable cars, this spectacular mountain route forges a path through dramatic scenery in the Northern Japan Alps.
Thanks to differences in elevation (from sea level to over 3000 metres), it offers up stunning autumn colours from September to early November.
Where? Hoshino Resorts KAI Alps: book now for next year’s colours following its grand reopening December 21, 2017.
