Get up close to the volcanic vents of Hokkaido’s highest peak!
Looking for a unique winter experience? How about donning snowshoes and walking on a snow-strewn volcano for remarkable views of steam rising from the Earth’s crust?
From December 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, you can trek on Hokkaido’s highest mountain, Mt. Asahidake, with a guide taking you to within metres of its billowing volcanic vents. A photo opportunity if ever there was one!
It’s all possible thanks to a specially-organized activity for guests at Hoshino Resorts OMO7 Asahikawa.
Mt. Asahidake is just an hour by road from Asahikawa, Hokkaido’s vibrant second city. The mountain, the island’s highest at 2291m, is located in the Daisetsuzan National Park nd famed for the dense plumes of steam emanating from its slopes.
Most of the year, these cannot be accessed, as walking is restricted to marked paths to preserve the Alpine flora. But in winter, a blanket of snow protects the plant life, offering a direct route to its volcanic vents.
You’ll take a ropeway up to around 1600m before strapping on snowshoes and following your guide to the volcanic vents.
On a clear day, you’ll have stunning views of the surrounding Ishikari mountains. And if the weather conditions are right, you may be treated to some of nature’s most captivating spectacles, including clouds of diamond dust, sun pillars or the hypnotic beauty of rime ice.
Make sure you take your camera!
