Want to know more about the prize?
This month, we’re giving away three wooden objects, all crafted in traditional kanuma latticework from the mountainous region of Nikko.
The style involves crafting striking geometric patterns by assembling finely-cut strips of local wood such as Kiso cypress, Akita cedar and Nikko cedar. The art is thought to have originated during the construction of Nikko’s famed Toshogu Shrine, when craftspeople from all over Japan came together to share their expertise and techniques.
Today, kanuma-kumiko is used to decorate room partitions, shoji sliding doors and other interior features.
You’ll see the distinctive hexagonal form of Nikko latticework in many of the rooms at Hoshino Resorts KAI Nikko.
