The Japanese white birch loves cold climates. Its white bark is a characteristic feature of both Hokkaido and northern Honshu. And its lime-green leaves turn a spectacular golden-yellow in the autumn.
Known locally as shirakaba, the tree’s wood is prized for its smooth texture and suppleness, with its bark thickening in particularly cold temperatures.
Thanks to these properties, it’s long been a material of choice for crafting furniture, tableware and snowshoes.
This month, we’re giving away an exquisite sake jug hand-crafted from Japanese white birch by Hokkaido artist Kota Fukunaga. To create his work, the artist hand-turns solid birch logs on a lathe, carefully uncovering layers of wood and bark for a striking natural finish.
Each object is then coated with a water-based resin to ensure its longevity.
