Want to know more about the prize?
The distinctive mosaic pattern on the back of this hand-held mirror is typical of Hakone parquetry, an art form you can discover yourself at Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone.
All the colours used in Hakone parquetry are naturally sourced from nearby forests: black wood comes from Jindai trees, red from Toona sinensis, green from magnolia, etc.
To create the mosaic pattern, long segments of different coloured wood are carefully shaped and glued together, creating a board called a taneita.
The artisan then cuts off a thin layer from the taneita, producing a delicate sheet of patterned wood, which is glued onto objects such as mirrors, boxes and coasters.
As a complement to the parquetry mirror, we’re also giving away 2 hair brooches in our contest. Crafted in Matsumoto, these colourful accessories will give your hair a touch of Japanese class!
The contest is now over. Thank you to everyone who entered!
